Spontaneous Song #22

Posted by on Nov 22 2010 | Audio, Sarah Sings, Songtaneous, Spontaneous Song a Day

I had a lot of musical input over the weekend and was a little at a loss for how to sift through it and create a song for today. To provide some structure, I decided to do a little skill building by improvising in 5/4. Since I still struggle with improvising in odd meters, I composed today’s song while listening to a metronome through headphones.

I’m always interesting in what happens to the melodic content of my improvisations when I place a lot of focus on another area. About two-thirds of the way through today’s song, I recall having the thought that I needed to introduce more space into the melody, which led me to singing longer tones. That, in turn, led to some interesting exploration in tone color.

Spontaneous Song #20

Posted by on Nov 19 2010 | Audio, Singing Lessons, Songtaneous, Spontaneous Song a Day

I have had so much musical input this month that I haven’t even begun to process it (let unload my poor overworked digital recorder *smile*).

Yesterday, I went back and listened to some of my friend Elise’s wonderful workshop at the beginning of the month. She taught us a great 4-part round she learned from a Brazilian visitor.

So today’s song started out in Brazil (kind of) and then headed somewhere else. *smile*
