Food for Thought (#104)

“A very wise old teacher once said: “I consider a day’s teaching wasted if we do not all have one hearty laugh.” He meant that when people laugh together, they cease to be young and old, master and pupils, jailer and prisoners. They become a single group of human beings enjoying its existence.”
– Gilbert Highet

“They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel.”
– Carol Buchner

I loved the Buchner quote, Sarah, perhaps because it aligns so much with my own gut feelings about teaching.

That said, it’s still easy to lose track of philosophy when you’re busy trying to correct papers from the last class, plan some engaging activity for the next class, and intuit how each of your students might learn best . . . or, at least, better in every class.

So, thanks for the timely reminder AND encouragement as many of us head into a new semester.

And a tip of the hat to my own teaching muse, Mrs. Umland. She knew how to make all of us in her 7th grade class feel special, and she treated us as if we might actually be smart. Special and smart . . . now that’s a fine way to feel.

    Thanks again!
